Our Life in Lists: {Sisterly Interaction}

Sisters. Friends.

To be totally honest, when I first found out I was pregnant with Caroline, I had a slight preference as to the baby's gender. I thought I wanted a boy - one of each, the perfect American family. When I really thought about it, I knew I didn't really care. I just wanted a healthy baby (you know the story). When we found out Caroline was a girl, we couldn't have been any more excited - we had already fallen in love with our baby whether girl or boy.

Now that I have two girls, I know that it's just right for us and I can't imagine it any other way. That said, if Caroline had been a Jack, I'm sure I'd feel the same way.

Anyways, Caroline and Riley are really starting to interact and I'm loving every second. The following scenarios happen on a regular basis:
  • Riley tries to teach Caroline how to do things. If I'm helping Caroline crawl, Riley will get down on all fours and demonstrate the proper technique.
  • Riley loves to make Caroline smile and Caroline is just as happy to be entertained by her big sister. Riley's little face lights up when she knows she's made Caroline happy. She'll run over and let me know that "I made her smile, Mommy!"
  • Caroline thinks it's great to watch Riley play around the house. If Riley runs by Caroline, she giggles and chatters like she's going to have a heart to heart with her best friend. I can't wait until I can listen in on their conversations in years to come.
  • Riley loves to "share" with Caroline. Sometimes she's got books piled up all around her and other times she's got a Boppy pillow squished beside her in the exersaucer; either way, Riley wants to make sure she's got something to play with.
  • Now that Caroline is able to reach for things Riley's playing with, we have our occasional, "That's mine!" moments. Riley's usually pretty good with sharing, but she definitely wants to keep certain things for herself.
  • Riley kisses Caroline on the head several times throughout the day. If I'm putting one of the girls down for a nap, Riley wants to give her sister a sweet peck on the head first. Caroline's just starting to give big, sloppy kisses. I'm not sure Riley's really going to be a big fan of those.

  1. I love sibling interactions - my favourite of this year was my 3yo daughter, who had just made my 8mth old smile and stop crying, saying "Mum, I happied her tears!"
