How to Make Money on a Small Blog

All of us who spend lots of time writing and reading blogs can't help but notice that tons of websites now have ad after ad on their sidebars. I've started advertising on my blog and recently received my first check - very exciting! While it definitely won't feed our family of 4 for much longer than a week, it was enough to buy some much-needed memory for my computer and have a little bit left over. Pretty cool, if you ask me.

Since most of what I have read on the subject is geared towards large blogs with a huge list of followers, I found that much of the information I read wasn't relevant to me. Also, many of those posts said making money on your blog takes lots of time - something I don't have. After the initial set up, what I do really doesn't take any time at all.

Want to see if you can supplement your income a tad? Here's what you can try.
  1. Sign up with Google Adsense. I know those ads can be annoying on sites, but they're generated by keywords, sites your followers visit, and sites that you visit. In other words, these ads should be relevant - not always sure that's the case, but I do see free crochet pattern ads pop up every couple of days on my site.
  2. Sign up with Google Affiliate Network. This allows you to pick advertisers and product ads for your blog. See the Target ad at the top right? That comes from the Google Affiliate Network.
  3. Offer advertising on your blog. If you click on the advertising link above, you'll see that I offer ads on my website for a very low price. I know some really popular blogs charge big money for advertising spots on their sidebars. I know I'm not big, so I have really low prices in hopes that someone will bite at it. If you're interested in growing your blog, you could also offer blog button swaps.
Like I said, these steps aren't going to generate boatloads of money. They might not even generate a bucket full of money. My philosophy is this: if I'm going to do it anyways, I might as well try to earn a few dollars.

  1. Love your blog's new look! I've wondered about Google Adsense and didn't know what kind of ads would end up on my blog. I may eventually try it since you've had no problems. :0
