Preschool at Home {O is for Owl}

O is for Owl

Let me start out by saying this: we had a really fun week in "preschool" this past week. In the photo above, Riley is demonstrating that she's more than proficient at making an owl sound. Every time I look at this photo it puts a smile on my face. Who cares that it isn't perfectly composed or in focus? This shot captures her little personality way too well.

owl unit

This week we finished our unit on owls. We had a great time doing some fun crafts and activities. Riley memorized Proverbs 8:33, learned the letter O and its sound, and took in more information on owls than she knew existed. We did lots of do-a-dot marker sheets involving the letter O, a fun packet or two (find out which one was our favorite in last week's preschool post), and talked about nocturnal animals. We used this worksheet to help keep Riley's attention. The picture we used in the Cheerio craft can be found here.

owlbook

On top of that, the neatest thing we did last week was create our first lapbook (if you're unfamiliar with lapbooking, read more here). It had all kinds of neat information inside - facts about owls, the parts of an owl, other "o words," etc. Let me tell you, after making our first book, I'm hooked. Riley had a great time "reading" it and talking about the facts. She retained way more information this week than she has before. I think having the visual aids along with an easy way to review contributed to that fact. There's a video of Riley and me reviewing the lapbook at the end of this post (please excuse her messy hair... she had hat head).

Owling

Riley's favorite activity of the week was "owling." We read the book Owl Moon, donned our heaviest winter coats (it was hot outside but we didn't care), and took turns hiding the owl and finding it. Thankfully, our neighbors gave us a very realistic looking stuffed owl that was perfect for this activity.  Riley was hysterical the entire time - she kept hiding it in the same spot over and over proceeded to crack up the entire time I searched all the wrong places.

peek-a-boo

Our little sidekick didn't have her best week ever... a cold and teething are not a good combination.

As promised, here's the video of Riley talking to me about owls. Please excuse the video - I took it with my phone and cut off her face some of the time.
