Off the Hook {Granny Stripe Baby Blanket}

Granny Stripe Blanket

We had a baby shower at church yesterday. Isn't it always fun to get together and celebrate a new little life? I made this blanket for Caroline and the mommy-to-be complimented it so I decided then and there that I was going to make her one for her new bundle of joy.

The most difficult part of this project was deciding on a color scheme. Our crazy friends decided they weren't going to find out the baby's gender - totally fun and totally understandable. If we have another, I've even contemplated doing the same. When you're trying to decide on a baby gift it's a totally different story. It's really difficult to choose colors that aren't "all boy" or "all girl." Not cool.

I guess I could have made the blanket black and white... that would totally make me think of a barcode, though. Anyways, when I was choosing the colors, I was originally going to stick with purple, green, and blue. I was afraid it would be a little gloomy, so I decided to spice it up with some red and white. I always like to throw a "wildcard" into my color selection anyways. For some reason, it tends to make everything pop. I definitely think the red accomplished that in this particular project.

Thankfully, I think the gift was well-received and declared "gender neutral" (A relief! I was a little afraid the purple made it too girly). If you need a quick baby gift, I definitely recommend this pattern. It worked up super quickly (probably 4-6 hours if I had been able to sit down and do it all at once) and is a gift that will be treasured for a lifetime. I'm so glad my mother-in-law gave Riley a crocheted baby blanket... if she hadn't, I probably wouldn't be crocheting today.

If you're interested in the specifics, I used the Granny Stripe Pattern from Attic 24. I honestly can't remember how many I chained but I think it was 90 (and the blanket measured about 30" square). I used Vanna's Choice yarn in Dusty Blue, Dusty Purple, Scarlet, Lime, and White (though I used Hobby Lobby's I Love This Yarn). I did a simple half double crochet border around the entire blanket.

  1. Hi Lauren! I love your blog! Last year my cousin asked for a baby blanket since she was obsessed with my crocheting. She also did not want to find out her baby's gender so I made her blanket yellow, white, and green. It was pretty but I love this one it's gorgeous. I hope that your friend loves it too!

  2. Thank you so much for sharing this! I have a friend who is expecting and she and her husband do not want to know the gender of the baby, but she has picked out colors, so I think I will use them and make this blanket. I love the idea of throwing in another color for some pop - her colors are yellow, grey and a light teal - any suggestions for a "pop" color? Thanks Lauren, I just love your blog :)

  3. Also, forgot to ask what size hook did you use?

  4. It looks great Lauren! I did a chain of 90 for the Attic 24 granny stripe baby blanket I'm doing at the moment.

  5. I just did this and tried to work a hdc border to the whole blanket. The top and bottom look fantastic but the sides look like a hot mess. I feel bad because the blanket is supposed to be a gift. Is there a trick to how to get the sides to look neat? How did you work your hdcs in?
