Owl Toy Crochet Pattern

Crochet Owl Toy Crochet Pattern

This past week, I wanted a quick project to make for my oldest daughter. Riley loves pink and I like to think that she loves owls (even though I'm the real owl lover around here). I'd seen a couple free owl patterns floating around, but none of them was exactly what I was looking for. I whipped up this adorable little owl in just a couple hours. For once, I wrote down the pattern as I went.

Materials:
-1 Skein of Vanna's Choice yarn (or something similar) in the main color
-Small amounts of coordinating colors
-G crochet hook
-H crochet hook
-Buttons
-Tapestry needle
    Free owl crochet pattern

For the body and legs, you'll use the G crochet hook. For the eyes, beak, and flower, use the H hook.
    Ch 2.
Round 1: 9 hdc into the first chain. (9)
Round 2: 2 hdc in each stitch around. (18)
Round 3: *hdc in the next stitch, 2 hdc in the next* around. (27)
Round 4: *hdc in the next two stitches, 2 hdc in the next* around. (36)
Round 5: *hdc in the next three stitches, 2 hdc in the next* around. (45)
Round 6: *hdc in the next four stitches, 2 hdc in the next* around. (54)
Round 7: *hdc in the next five stitches, 2 hdc in the next* around. (63)
Round 8-27: hdc in each stitch around. (63)
Round 28: *hdc in the next five stitches, hdc 2 together* around. (54)
Round 29: *hdc in the next four stitches, hdc 2 together* around. (45)
Rounds 30 - 31: hdc in each stitch around. Fasten off and leave a long tail for whip stitching the top together. (45)

    Eyes (2):
    Ch 3.
Round 1: 11 dc into the first ch. Sl st to the top of the first dc (not the chain). (11)
Round 2: ch 1. 2 hdc in each stitch around. Sl st to the top of the first hdc. (22)
Round 3: ch 1. 1 hdc in the same stitch, 2 hdc in the next. *1 hdc in the next stitch, 2 hdc in the next* around. Sl st to the top of the first hdc. Fasten off. Leave a long tail for sewing on the toy.

    Beak:
    Ch 7.
Row 1: sc in the first stitch, hdc in the next stitch, dc in the next stitch, tc in the remaining stitches. Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing on the toy.

    Legs (2):
    Ch 2.
Round 1: 6 sc into the first ch. (6)
Round 2: 2 sc into each stitch around. (12)
Round 3: *1 sc in the next stitch, 2 sc in the next* around. (18)
Rounds 4-5: sc in each stitch around. (18)
Round 6: *sc in the next 4 stitches, sc 2 together* around. (15)
Round 7: *sc in the next 3 stitches, sc 2 together* around. Fasten off and weave ends. Stuff the end of the foot as it will be difficult to do later. (12)
Round 8: Join second yarn color with a slip stitch. Ch 1, hdc in each stitch around. (12)
Rounds 9-?: hdc in each stitch around until legs are the desired length. (12)
Finish stuffing legs and sew on the base of the owl.

    Rosette:
    Ch 21.
Row 1: SC in the second ch from hook. *ch 2, skip 1, SC* around. SC in the last ch.
Row 2: *Ch 2, 4 DC, ch 2, sl st* in the first chain loop and in each chain loop until you reach the end. Leave a long tail.

You should have been creating a spiral of petals. Once you're finished, arrange your spiral into a flower and secure with the tail. After you secure the back,  sew it on the body of the owl. Stuff your toy (pretty firmly) and whip stitch the top closed. Add tufts of yarn to the corners to define the owl's "ears" a little and pass your creation on to an owl lover you know and love.

    16. I have a few questions about this pattern....I am trying to make this for my sister for her birthday. At the end of each row do I turn or do I just keep crocheting in a circle?

      1. Meghan, I hope you figured it out already, but just in case, you don't have to turn, simply use a marker at the beginning of each row so you know where you started last time and where the next row begins. I am almost finishing it and it's looking lovely!

        God bless you,
        Karen

    20. I have the same question and Meghan. do you crochet in the round or turn and go back and forth. I am on the fourth row and though I should find out before I get much further. Thank you so much for the pattern, I know I will enjoy whipping this up.
