Believe it or not, we've haven't had any truly cold weather yet. I know those of you up north are jealous of our seventies and sunshine, but we really would like some cooler temperatures. We like wearing sweaters every once in a while, too. Anyways, this hat is one that can be worn regardless of the temperature. Its cotton yarn and open weave allow for plenty of air flow. In fact, Riley is sporting the hat in these pictures as I type. She's in a hat mood today, I think.
Another thing that I like about this hat is the fact that it's quick. Many hats start with several rows of SC increases. Cute? Absolutely! Time consuming? Yep! With this hat, you'll start out like you would a granny square. You can see from the next picture, the top of the hat is still attractive to look at; it's just lots quicker.

To make this hat, here's what you'll need:
- 1 skein of worsted weight yarn
- small amounts of two other colors for the trim at the bottom and the flower
- Size I (G for the flower) crochet hook
- This flower pattern
Here's the pattern for the hat (Should fit girls approximately 2-4). Experiment with different hook sizes and you might be able to create different sizes.
Ready?
Ch 3.
Round 1: DC twice in the third ch from hook (these 2 DC plus the extra 2 count as a cluster of 3 DCs), ch 1. *3 DC, ch 1* 3 more times into the first ch. You should have 4 groups of 3 DCs. Sl st in the top of the 2 chs).
Round 2: Sl st in the next DC, ch 2, 2 DC in the same stitch. Ch 1. *3 DC in the next ch 1 space, ch 1. Skip next DC. 3 DC in the next st, ch1. Skip next stitch. 3 DC in the next ch 1 space, ch 1* around. Sl st in the top of the ch 2. (at the end of this round you should have 8 groups of 3 DCs).
Round 3: Repeat round 2. (at the end of this round you should have 16 groups of 3 DCs).
Round 4: Sl st in next two DCs. Ch 2, 2 DC in the first ch 1 space. Ch 1. *3 DC in the next ch 1 space, ch 1* around. Sl st in the top of the ch 2.
Rounds 5-8: Repeat round 4.
Round 9-15: Ch 1, HDC in the next stitch and in each st around. Mark first stitch of each round. You will not ch 1 at the beginning of each round. You will simply HDC in spiral. At the end of round 15, sl st in the top of the first st and finish off.
Round 16: join a contrasting color. Ch 1, HDC in next st and in each st around. Sl st to the ch 1 to join. Finish off.
Any suggestions on making this hat quite a bit bigger? A lady asked me to make one for her 10 year old.
ReplyDeleteYou could try making it with a larger hook and see what happens. I have only made this size, thus far. If I think of anything else, I'll let you know.
ReplyDeleteThank You!
ReplyDeleteWhat kind of yarn did you use?
ReplyDeleteLily Sugar n Cream :)
DeleteI finished my hat today finally after having to rip apart 4 previous attempts LOL! At first I couldn't seem to get it right and then all of a sudden it came to me! Its very cute and I made a matching scarf from the same color yarn as a gift for my 3 yr old niece. Thanks for this wonderful pattern!
ReplyDeleteSo glad you like the pattern and that it worked out for you! Sorry it was confusing at first but glad you had that "Oh, that's what this crazy girl means!" moments :)
DeleteIn round 1 are all the stitches in the third chain from the hook? I got a little lost when I went to the next round. Help pleeeease! :))
ReplyDeleteYep, you work that whole round into the third chain from the hook :)
DeleteBNichols...yes, they all go in the same stitch on round one! :)
ReplyDeleteI stumbled upon this hat yesterday and immediately moved it to the top of my list. I'm almost finished with the hat in a springy yellow and my 2 year old has requested it in two other colors already! It's precious, super fast, and very easy!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!
Awesome! So glad you and your little girl like it! Would love to see pictures!
DeleteMine turned out to be adult size! I wonder if it was because I used Red Heart 4 worsted yarn? I thought I followed the pattern exactly....maybe not. I still love it and will try it again..need it for a three year old. Thank you so much for the pattern!
ReplyDeleteStrange! I use a worsted weight yarn. I crochet rather tightly so you could try using a smaller hook to obtain a smaller size. Sorry for the inconvenience. : /
DeleteTami, my first was turned out to fit me too, instead of the 3 year olds it was intended for. I used the same yarn you did too with an H hook. Tried it again with a G hook and it fits my 10 month old this time! I'm thinking about only starting with 3 groups of 3 DC's in the first round but still using the H hook and seeing how that turns out. They're super cute beanies, so i'm not worried about someone using them with all my experiments with size! lol!
ReplyDeleteGlad you were able to get one the right size with a different hook. I need to do a gauge swatch soon. :) Like I just replied to Tami, I do crochet a little bit on the tight side compared to some, I guess. I should stick to flower patterns... it doesn't matter then :)
DeleteHi Lauren,
ReplyDeleteI think I've pretty much made all your patterns now and I love them! Thanks so much for sharing.
Question - for Round 2, I'm wondering if there is a typo in the following? "*3 DC in the next ch 1 space, ch 1. Skip next DC. 3 DC in the next ch 1 space, ch 1*"
I'm wondering if the 2nd "next ch 1 space" should be "next DC"? That's what I did anyway.
Also, my hat ended up being adult sized as well so I undid the HDCs and made a small change. I just skipped the chain spaces and only did a HDC in each of the DCs so I ended up with 48 total (16 x 3). I think it will look OK... will be stretched in the HDC band but maybe not as much on the DC section when the child is wearing it.
Thank you so much for sharing all your lovely patterns. I feel so bad because I don't understand. I am so confused on how to get it started. :( I am used to a ring in the center and have tried it three different ways including the ring, but mine always looks like a knotted mess. :( Nothing wrong with your pattern, my brain just isn't with it. :( I love your patterns too. Saving your page so I can try another day.
ReplyDeleteHmm... If you look up crocheting in the round it might really help! I often use the chain method (where you're working into the first chain) and it turns out great!
DeleteIs there a trick to attaching the flower? I'm feeling a bit lost!

ReplyDeleteHi ! I just made this beanie for my 4 month old. it's a little big for her,so i drew a chain through a row of HDC and tied it to form a bow. i can adjust the string of chains to fit perfectly. my mom's idea :) drsaijanani@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI am also having trouble with understanding round 2.
