DIY Birthdate Print

Let me just start out by saying this.  I love Pinterest!  It's a great site for visually bookmarking your favorite stuff on the web.  I hate looking through a list of sites trying to remember which is the one I'm looking for at the moment.  With Pinterest, I'm able to do that quickly and easily.

As I was checking the boards I follow a bit ago, I came across a super-cute birthdate display print.  When I followed the link, it took me to this Etsy shop and I saw that it was $34.00. I decided to give it a try myself.  You might not find the end result quite as cute (so head over to buy the original if you'd like that perfect gift), but I'm really happy with it.  Here's what I came up with:

If you're interested in making one for yourself, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised to hear how easily it can be done.

  1. Open a word document and create 4 text boxes.  Make them tall and skinny so the numbers go on top of each other rather than beside each other.  I lined up the first and third and the second and fourth rather than have them be straight across.
  2. Write out the date in the format you'll be using on a slip of paper (so you don't have to think when you go to enter them). You should have four columns with two numbers.  Plug the numbers into the text boxes.
  3. Center another text box along the bottom of your date for the name.
  4. Center another text box below that for the stats.  I used size 13 font and expanded it by 6 points.   I made the @ and & size 18 to help them stand out.
  5. Adjust the fonts and colors to suit your fancy.  I chose Bakersville (size 250) for the numbers, Old Script for the name (adjust to make the name look right), and Futura (size 13) for the stats at the very bottom.  The colors I used go well with Riley's room (though I'm debating about the orange).

The possibilities for this are quite endless.  I can't wait to print one out and frame it for the next friend who has a baby.  I also think  it would be perfect for bridal showers and weddings.  If you know the colors of the couple's home, it would be perfect!
