Japanese Flower Motif Crochet Pattern

Beatiful Crochet Coaster Pattern

If you've followed my blog and seen my crochet patterns for any length of time, you're well aware with the fact that I love to crochet flowers. I've seen a few Japanese flower motifs recently and fell in love. I decided to whip up one of my own, and after a few trial and error attempts, I came up with one that I'm pleased with. I think it would be beautiful to make an entire afghan out of these flowers, but it's probably more likely that I'll use them as a stack of coasters on the coffee table. Either way, they're beautiful and I'm going to enjoy them.

Simple Crochet Coaster Pattern

This project just uses a small amount of yarn. Have lots of tiny skeins of yarn floating around your craft room? This project is just the one for you. I could probably make 16 rainbow afghans with all the yarn I have floating around my house. I think they'd even make fun blankets for a baby girl.

Materials:
- small amounts of 100% cotton, worsted weight yarn in three colors
- Tapestry needle for weaving ends

Notes:
Starting Double Crochet Cluster (SDCC): ch 3, wrap yarn around hook. Insert hook into a dc from the previous round. Pull up a loop; yarn over, pull through 2 loops. There should be 2 loops remaining on your hook. Yarn over, insert hook into the SAME stitch; pull up a loop; yarn over, pull through 2 loops. There should now be 3 loops on your hook. Yarn over, pull through all loops.

Double Crochet Cluster (DCC): Wrap yarn around hook. Yarn over, insert hook into the SAME stitch. Pull up a loop; yarn over, pull through 2 loops. There should now be 4 loops on your hook. Yarn over, pull through all loops.

Japanese Flower Motif Crochet Pattern

Japanese Flower Motif:
ch 5. Join with a sl st to form ring.
Round 1: ch 2, 9 dc into ring. Sl st to the top of the first dc. Cut yarn and weave ends. (9)
Round 2: Join second color yarn with a sl st. Ch 2, SDCC, ch 2 in the same stitch. *DCC, ch 2* in each stitch around. Sl st to the top of the SDCC. Cut yarn and weave ends. (9 dc clusters)
Round 3: Join third color yarn with a sl st in any of the ch 2 spaces between the clusters. ch 5 (counts as dc and ch 3), dc in the same ch 2 space. hdc in the next stitch (which would be the top of the SDCC). *dc, ch 3, dc in the next ch space. hdc in the next stitch (top of the DCC)* around. Do not sl st at the end of this round.  (9 ch 3 spaces formed)
Round 4: work 1 sc, 5 dc, 1 sc in the first ch 3 space *sc, 5 dc, sc* in each ch 3 space around. Sl st to the first sc to join. Cut yarn and weave ends. (9 petals formed)

how to crochet a japanese flower

If you're like me and you think these would make a beautiful afghan, check out this YouTube video. It will demonstrate how you can join your flowers (it's a join as you go method, so don' work up 50 flowers and then go watch the video). It's really simple, and the results would be stunning.

  1. Beautiful flowers : ) I can't wait to try them out!
One question: I'm a little confused about your instruction in Round 2 where you state to dc2tog and dc3tog. Does this mean to make 2 dc in the same stitch and 3 dc in the same stitch? Usually I see the "dc2tog" referencing a decrease in patterns, which doesn't seem to be happening here.

  2. Hi, Jillian. I replied to your comment via email, but figured others might wonder the same thing so I decided to address it here, as well.

You will be working three double crochets together in round 2. This is the same thing as decreasing. This will form a cluster of stitches. Since you'll be adding a ch2 between each cluster your work will remain flat. Hope this helps. :)

  7. Dear Lauren, I always read your posts and try to make your patters hopping I get as well as you :)
My big problem here is that, even if I can understand your instructions, some abbreviations are confused to me because I'm from Mexico and sometimes I can't figure it out as much as the reality is :(

I guess I keep trying it all until it get right :D
Sometimes it help if the image is going step by step :S

Thanks for everything you post and share with others cause, thanks to you, I can make things I don't even know I can :)

    Hugs and kisses from Mexico

  10. Hi Lauren! I love this pattern but I agree with Debra, I think a video would be extremely helpful. I'm having a hard time with round 2.

  11. I think on round 2 a cluster stitch is maybe what shes talking about. You start a double chain but dont finish it then you do it again twice when u have 4 loops on hook then you pull through. At least thats what I did and it looks the same.

  12. Also dont forget to chain 2 in between each cluster stitch

  15. These are so cute! I'm having trouble following the instructions though. The cluster stitch (SDCC) starts with a ch 3, right after you just did ch 2, so that's 5 ch in a row. It doesn't look right at all when I do it.
