Free Market Tote Crochet Pattern

Market Tote Crochet Pattern

Need a quick gift for a little girl in your life? This might be the perfect thing! Whip one up in a couple hours while listening to an ebook or spending time with your family, add a flower or other embellishment, and you're good to go! How cute would it be to add some felt or crocheted food inside the bag? Riley has already spent a good deal of time enjoying this bag and I know she would absolutely love having items to go in it! It would also make a good yarn storage bag - it holds a good number of cotton skeins.

The finished dimensions of this bag are approximately 12 inches deep by 11 inches wide with a 9 inch "deep" handle (though that's easily adjustable).

Before you get started, make sure you have the following:
  • About 250 yards of worsted weight yarn
  • An I hook
  • A safety pin for marking stitches.
  • A flower or other embellishment to spice it up!

NOTE: the chain 2 at the beginning of the first four rounds does NOT count as the first stitch – you will need to work in that stitch you would normally skip. You will be joining rounds in the first true DC stitch rather than the top of the turning chain.

Ch 3.
Round 1: Work 12 DC in the first chain from hook. Join in the top of the first DC. (12)
Round 2: ch 2. 2 DC in each stitch around. Join to the top of the first DC. (24)
Round 3: ch 2. *DC in the next stitch, 2 DC in the next* around. Join in the top of the first DC. (36)
Round 4: ch 2. *DC in the next 2 stitches, 2 DC in the next* around. Join in the top of the first DC.(48)

Beginning at round 5, you will be working in spiral. You will not join at the end of each round. I mark the first stitch of each round with a safety pin so I don't lose my spot.

Market Tote Tutorial

Round 5: Ch 3. *DC, ch 1* in each stitch. Do not slip stitch to the top of the starting chain. Instead, insert your hook in the first ch1 space of round 5 and continue with round 6 (see photo above).

NOTE: Please understand that since you're working in spiral, there will be a gap when you first transition to working in spiral. If you'd like to minimize this gap, make the last stitch of round 5 and the first stitch of round 6 a hdc.

Rounds 6-23: DC, ch 1 in each ch 1 space.

At the end of round 23, join with a slip stitch to the first DC of the previous round.

Round 24: Ch 2. DC in each ch 1 space.
Round 25: ch 2. DC BETWEEN each DC of the previous round.

Handles will be worked in rows. The Ch 2 does count as a stitch here. I work between stitches, but you could work in the stitches, too.

Row 1: Ch 2. DC in the next 9 stitches. (10)
Row 2: ch 2, turn. DC decrease in the next two stitches. DC in the next 5. DC decrease in the last two stitches. (8)
Row 3: ch 2, turn. DC decrease in the next two stitches. DC in the next 3. DC decrease in the last two stitches. (6)
Rows 4-15: ch 2, turn. DC in the next 5 stitches (6). (Continue on if you’d like longer straps)

Cut yarn and weave ends. Fold your bag in half as evenly as possible to determine where to start the other side of the handle (I skipped 15 stitches) and work the handle on the other side of the bag. Single crochet the two sides of the handle together on the wrong side.

I hope you enjoy the pattern. Feel free to use it (and even sell the items you've made), but please remember to link back to this post so others can give it a try as well. And, as always, please use your own photos when selling items made from this pattern.

    1. Hi, Sandy! I used robin's egg from Lily Sugar'n Cream (there's also a similar one with Peaches and Cream) and Dark Taupe Peaches and Cream. They're both 100% cotton.

  6. Hi, I was wondering if you have an easy suggestion, to make this bigger, for an adult sized "Market" bag, perhaps?
I'd love to make these for some friends for personalized Christmas presents. : )

  11. Hi there,
Beginner fiber artist here...my rounds from 6-up are curly curly. I'm reluctant to keep going--am I misuderstanding the instructions for rows 6-23? I'm making a dc, then adding an extra chain before yarning over to start the next dc in the next space.
I'm very excited to make this tote (thank you so much for sharing).

  37. If I continue adding rows from row 3 adding 12 stitches each time will this be the correct way to make the bag larger?

  38. I just loved your bag. Simple to follow pattern. I applied this patten with few changes like increased the bottom rows, made a band on top with handles on both sides. I have pinned yours and my finished bag in my board

  40. Thanks, Lauren! I love this bag!!! It's adorable! To save a little time.. I'm wondering if the ladies that want an 'adult size' pattern, have tried using a larger hook... It does make it a little looser, although it gives it more stretch as well. :)
Thank you again, Lauren! I look forward to trying more of your patterns.

  42. I, like so many others, am having trouble transitioning from making circles to crocheting in the spiral at row 5 to 6. I cannot find a tutorial on how to do this and it doesn't seem like the author of this pattern is providing any answers. I guess I'll have to abandon this project and seek out another tote pattern to make but I would really appreciate a mini-tutorial here to show how to go from round 5 to 6. Thanks!

  51. Hi Lauren! I have 260 m of some yarn that was available here in the UAE called Super Incident by Nako. It's a 75% acrylic and rest wool. Would I be able to make the bag with this yarn and the amount I have? And also which hook size would give me the best result? Would be grateful if you could reply to my queries at meera2310@gmail.com
Thanks for the pattern and also request you for the pattern of the flower.

  57. Great FREE pattern! Thank you so much for sharing this. I found it was very easy to follow, even for a beginner like me. I made this for 'tween girl, used Peaches 'n Cream Psychedelic print yarn and a slightly larger hook. The size came out perfect. I did have to go to youtube for a video tutorial on decreasing stitches for the handle because I am new to this. I'm planning on making several more right away. I don't crochet that fast, it took me a few more than 'a couple of hours.'
